      Acknowledgments

Some of those to whom I am indebted I know, and to them I can acknowledge my debt. I am aware of others, notably patients, on whose cooperation I have always to depend, but who must remain anonymous. Dr. Elliott Jaques, Mr. R. Money-Kyrle and Dr. H. Segal have helped by reading and criticizing my manuscript. Just what generosity of time and effort this means for practising psycho-analysts can only be appreciated by another practising analyst.

Finally, as always, there is my debt to my wife without whose support I could not attempt to write at all.
